Whether you're planning on hiring a tree, growing your own or making one out of books, a tree without lights just isn't a Christmas tree. Traditional lights guzzle a lot of electricity, but a far greener solution is to buy a set of lights made from low energy LEDs.

WOOWOO sell strings of solar fairy lights in various colours, at prices starting at £17.99. From simple white to festive variations, you can make your tree look as tacky or minimalistic as you like.
Lights4fun sell the cheapest LED fairy lights I've seen out there: £9.99 for a basic white set.
Eco Geek Living, meanwhile, are selling a solar powered LED fairy light set for a slightly less exchange rate favourable than it use to be $39.97 plus postage.

You get 60 LED bulbs over 37ft of cabling and they'll glow for eight hours after a 2-4 hour charge time. The idea is that you stake the solar panel into the ground and, fingers crossed, there'll be enough daylight to power it up before you switch it on at night. Pretty good really and they look nice too. Bargain.
